South Alabama plus 28 at Tennessee
So how much is a 5-5 team from the SEC worth at home against a 5-5 team from the Sun Belt?
The oddsmaker says four touchdowns in this matchup of South Alabama versus Tennessee.
Given the situational spot and the probable return of quarterback Jake Bentley for South Alabama, I’d say the underdog Jaguars are a bargain getting this many points.
Tennessee has gone through an SEC gauntlet its last four games playing Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Georgia. The Volunteers scored their first road win against a top-20 opponent in 15 years when they beat then 18th-ranked Kentucky, 45-42, two weeks ago. However, the Volunteers got buried, 41-17, at home by top-ranked Georgia last week.
That was a deflating loss for Tennessee. It’s going to be difficult for the Volunteers to get motivated for South Alabama, a middle of the road Sun Belt team. The Volunteers return to SEC action next week to close their regular season against in-state rival Vanderbilt. This is a definite flat spot for them.
Bentley can keep South Alabama competitive. He’s experienced against SEC competition having played for South Carolina from 2016-18. The Gamecocks were 3-0 against Tennessee with Bentley as their quarterback. Bentley missed the Jaguars’ 31-7 loss to Appalachian State last week due to a knee injury suffered a couple of weeks ago. Bentley started the Jaguars’ first nine games, completing 70.5 percent of his passes for 2,125 yards and 15 TD’s.
