Twins plus $1.20 at Rays
The Twins own the best record in the American League. However, they were thoroughly embarrassed by the Rays on Thursday getting bashed, 14-3. The loss was especially galling to Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli, who played and coached for the Rays.
So are the Twins worth backing today against the hot Rays – winners of six in a row – and playing at tricky Tropicana Field?
I say yes based on the plus price Minnesota is getting, the starting pitching matchup and the Twins’ offensive strength. The Twins have shown they can win on the road, winners of nine of their last 11 away games, and on astroturf going 6-1 the past seven times.
Certainly Minnesota won’t lack motivation. The Twins also don’t lack hitting either ranking either first or second in runs, batting average and homers.
Jose Berrios is on the cusp of being an elite pitcher. He is 7-2 with a 3.20 ERA. Minnesota is 7-1 in his last eight starts. I like him far more than Tampa Bay’s nominal starter, Ryne Stanek. The Rays are going with their opener approach here where they are going to parade out a number of relievers. Stanek has been solid. He hasn’t pitched more than two innings in any game this season, though.
So I will take Berrios and the best hitting team in baseball against the Tampa Bay bullpen – long relievers and middle relievers – while getting the bonus of a plus price.
