Nover’s View: UW-Green Bay at Minnesota

On December 22, 2021, in Free Picks, NCAAB, by Stephen

Minnesota minus 17 hosting UW Green Bay

These teams met 13 months ago and Minnesota buried Green Bay, 99-69, at home. The Gophers are much better this season, a huge early surprise under first year head coach Ben Johnson with nine wins in their first 10 games. Minnesota’s only loss came to then 19th-ranked Michigan State.

Green Bay wasn’t supposed to be very good this season. The Phoenix are living up to that projection with a 2-8 record. They rank 340th in scoring at 61.1 points a game.

The Phoenix played one Big Ten team, in-state rival Wisconsin. The Badgers smashed Green Bay, 72-34. Minnesota, by contrast, played one of the best Big Ten teams two games ago and upset Michigan on the road by 10 points.

According to the NET rankings, which measures net efficiency adjusted for strength of opponent and locations, Minnesota ranks as the 35th-best team in the country while Green Bay is 333rd out of 358 Division I programs.

That supports my power ratings, which have Minnesota more than 20 points better than Green Bay on a neutral court. So laying this number at home with Minnesota is a bargain.
